Things to do in Rome (Italy)
One of the largest Piazza's in Rome, passing through you'll see some beautiful architecture of buildings and fountains. Coffee shops and cafe's line the Piazza along with a few shops.
Located on the river bank a short walk from the Vatican is The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant'Angel.
The Sistine chapel is located in the Vatican Museum and is the biggest attraction, but there is so much more so see and experience as you learn about the history of the Vatican.
One of the most famous archeological and best preserved sites in the World. Pompei isn't in Rome, but you can arrange trips to see it, if you have time to go, it is a fascinating place. Mount Vesuvius erupted on 24th August AD 79, it engulfed the two flourishing Roman towns of Pompei and Herculaneum.
The harbour city of ancient Rome has some excellent ancient ruins and gives a good insight into the life of the Roman population. Ostia Antica is a short trip away from the centre of Rome, you can take a 40 minute train journey or use the local bus.
How to get there: The main international airport in Rome is Ciampino Airport which has shuttle buses and a trains available directly outside, these will take you to the centre of Rome. The bus is a lot cheaper and they both go to the same place.

Local Knowledge: There are tourists hop-on/off buses which cover most of the sites, although the old part of Rome isn't spread over a huge area, if you don't mind walking, you might be better off on foot. Rome is obviously very old, the streets are narrow, a tourist map is a big help - mark the sights you want to see and plan your days in advance.
The ticket for the colliseum and forum normally come as a combined ticket, they are next to each other so it is a good idea to do them on the same day. You can a head-phone style tour guide which explains the history of the colliseum, to hire these, you may need to use your passport or driving license as ID.
Weather: Rome is very hot and busy in the summer months. A good time of year to visit is March/April or September/October, the temperature is still warm and it's not as busy!
