Big Ben is the name given to the giant Bells inside the Elizabeth tower at the north end of the palace of Westminster. The bell inside the tower is officially called the great bell, although people know it as Big Ben after Sir Benjamin Hall, a large man and the first commissioner for works – 1855 – 1858.

The tower holding the Bell was renamed the ‘Elizabeth Tower’ in 2012 to celebrate the diamond jubilee, prior to that it was simply known as the ‘Clock Tower’. The tower is recognised as a symbol of the UK and known around the globe as a fantastic landmark.
